Agadir Kasbah by Cable Car or by Road: Which to Choose

From the deck of your ship you can see it straight away: the hill above the Port of Agadir, crowned by the walls of the old Kasbah, Agadir Oufella, with the Arabic inscription "God, Country, King" on its slope. It is the most popular first stop for cruise passengers, and there are two ways to get up there: the Teleferic cable car or the road.

This guide, written by our local team in Agadir, explains what each option involves and which one suits your port day. For a wider plan of the city, see Agadir in one day from a cruise ship.

What you will find at the top

Agadir Oufella is the site of the old fortified village on the hill above the port. The old town on the hill was largely destroyed in the 1960 earthquake; today the walls and ruins remain, and the site is a viewpoint and a place to learn about the city's history.

  • The view: wide panoramas over the bay, the marina, the long beach and the port where your ship is docked.
  • The inscription: the Arabic words for "God, Country, King" on the hillside, one of the best-known sights in Agadir.
  • The ground: slopes, loose surfaces and uneven paths around the ruins. Comfortable closed shoes make a real difference.

Option 1: the Teleferic cable car

The modern cable car carries you from a station at the foot of the hill up to the Kasbah. The ride is part of the experience: the bay, the beach and the city open up below you as you climb.

Why choose the cable car

  • You enjoy the views during the ride, not only at the top.
  • It is a memorable experience for children and first-time visitors.
  • It fits a short call: our port guide's 4-hour plan starts with the Kasbah viewpoint by cable car or car.

Things to keep in mind

  • Like any cable car, it can be paused for weather or maintenance, and there can be a wait at busy times. It helps to have the road as a back-up.
  • You still need transport between the port and the cable car, before and after the ride.
  • If you are uneasy with heights or enclosed cabins, the road will feel more comfortable.

Our Teleferic panoramic cable car ride combines the ride with time on the hill; the tour page shows the current itinerary and price.

Option 2: by road

A winding road climbs the hill. With a driver, you go from the cruise terminal to the top without changing transport, which saves time and effort.

Why choose the road

  • Door to door from the ship: your driver waits at the Port of Agadir cruise terminal holding a sign with your name (see how meeting your driver at the terminal works).
  • Less dependent on the weather: a windy morning does not change your plan.
  • Easy to combine: our half-day Agadir city tour includes the Kasbah viewpoint, the Mohammed V Mosque, an argan oil cooperative and Souk El Had, with a scenic drive past the beach and marina.
  • Less walking overall, although the ruins themselves remain uneven.

What about walking up?

The hill is steep, the road winds and there is little shade. Distances from the port are easy by car but long on foot, especially in the midday sun, so we do not recommend walking up on a port day.

Which option suits your port day?

  • A short call and a first visit: both work. Choose the cable car for the experience, or the road if you want to save time.
  • You want to see more of the city: the road, as part of a city tour that continues to the souk and the seafront.
  • Travelling with children: the cable car is often the highlight of the day. For a fuller programme, see Agadir Discovery: city tour, cable car and Crocoparc.
  • Limited mobility or a fear of heights: the road. Tell us about your needs before booking so we can plan the stops.
  • A windy day: the road is the safer bet.

Whichever you choose, our tours are planned around your ship's published schedule. Keep your all-aboard time in mind all day: being back on board on time is the passenger's responsibility. Distances, taxis and the port layout are covered in our Agadir cruise port guide and in is Agadir port close to the city?

Tips for the Kasbah hill

  • Bring a hat, sunscreen and water: the hilltop is exposed to sun and wind.
  • Hold on to hats, phones and cameras near the edge on breezy days.
  • Politely decline unofficial guides; a simple "no, thank you" is enough.
  • Ask before photographing people.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from the cruise port to the Kasbah?

By car along the winding road, or by car to the cable car and then up by cable car. With a booked tour, your driver meets you at the cruise terminal with a sign showing your name.

Is the cable car worth it on a short port call?

Yes, if the cable car is running and you enjoy the ride itself. If you would rather save time or combine the Kasbah with the souk and the seafront, the road as part of a city tour is more efficient.

Can I walk up to the Kasbah from the ship?

We do not recommend it. Walking inside the working port is usually not allowed, and the hill is steep with little shade.

What happens if the cable car is not running on my port day?

The road is the alternative. Contact us before or during your call and we will suggest how to adapt the plan to your time in port.

Is the Kasbah suitable for travellers with limited mobility?

The views can be reached by road, but the ruins involve slopes and loose surfaces. Tell us about any mobility needs before booking and we will tell you what is realistic.
