Taghazout from the Agadir Cruise Port: Surf Village Guide

Taghazout is the laid-back fishing village north of Agadir that became one of Morocco's best-known surf spots. Colourful houses tumble down to the beach, surf shops and cafés line the main street, and the Atlantic rolls in below. For cruise passengers, the question is simple: can you fit it into a port day, and is it worth it?

This guide, written by our local team in Agadir, covers getting there, what to do and how to plan around your ship's schedule.

How far is Taghazout from the cruise port?

Taghazout lies about 15–20 km north of the Port of Agadir along the coast road. It is easily reachable on a port day, but it is not a walk or a quick taxi hop like the marina: count on a drive in each direction, and leave room for traffic on the way back.

As a rule of thumb, Taghazout suits a longer call. On a short call, the beach promenade and marina in Agadir give you the sea air with far less time on the road. Our article is Agadir port close to the city? compares distances from the port.

Getting there

By grand taxi

Grand taxis cover longer distances outside the city and can be hired for a whole trip. Before you get in, agree clearly on the price, the stops and the return time, and confirm whether the price is for the car or per person. Carry small notes, as drivers do not always have change.

With a booked excursion

We do not list a dedicated Taghazout excursion. If you would rather not negotiate a taxi, our booked tours give you the sea, the surf or the hills without any haggling: a 2-hour surf lesson on Agadir's beach, or Paradise Valley with lunch and transfers in the Atlas foothills on a longer call. Pickup at the Port of Agadir cruise terminal is available for both tours: your driver waits there holding a sign with your name. Tours are paid online in advance by card or PayPal.

What to do in Taghazout

  • Watch the surfers. The coast around Taghazout has a string of well-known breaks. Even if you never stand on a board, watching from the shore is part of the atmosphere.
  • Walk through the village. Narrow lanes, painted walls, surf shops and small galleries; it is compact and easy to explore at a gentle pace.
  • Sit in a café with a sea view. Mint tea or fresh juice on a terrace above the beach is the classic Taghazout moment.
  • Enjoy the beach. Paddle or relax on the sand. The Atlantic can be powerful, so only swim where conditions are calm and follow local advice.

Want to surf on your port day?

Taghazout is famous for experienced surfers, but you do not need to go that far to try surfing. Our 2-hour surf lesson in Agadir takes place on Agadir's beach, closer to the port, in a small group with a professional instructor. The board and wetsuit are included, and the lesson suits complete beginners as well as intermediate surfers.

A few tips if you plan to surf:

  • Bring swimwear, a towel and a bag for wet things.
  • Tell us your ship and date when booking, so the lesson is planned around your ship's published schedule. Pickup at the Port of Agadir cruise terminal is available for this tour too: your driver waits with a name sign.
  • Leave time to shower and change before heading back to the port.

Planning Taghazout around your ship's schedule

  1. Write down your all-aboard time from the ship's daily programme. Being back on board on time is the passenger's responsibility.
  2. Plan backwards. Decide when you need to leave Taghazout, add the drive and a comfortable margin, and keep to it.
  3. Keep it simple. Taghazout plus a coffee on the Agadir seafront works well; Taghazout plus the Kasbah, the souk and Paradise Valley on the same day does not.
  4. Have a contact number. Save the taxi driver's number and agree on a clear pickup point for the return.

Prefer to stay close to the port? The half-day Agadir city tour covers the Kasbah viewpoint, an argan cooperative and Souk El Had. On a long call, nature lovers can also consider Paradise Valley with lunch and transfers instead of the coast; our Paradise Valley guide for cruise passengers explains who it suits.

What to wear and bring

  • Beachwear is fine on the beach; in the village streets and cafés, a cover-up or T-shirt is more respectful.
  • Sun hat, sunscreen and water: the sun is strong even on cool days.
  • A little cash in dirhams for cafés and small shops.
  • Your ship card and any documents your cruise line asks you to carry ashore.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Taghazout during a cruise stop in Agadir?

Yes. Taghazout is about 15–20 km north of the port, so it fits a longer call. Keep your all-aboard time in mind and leave a comfortable margin for the drive back.

Is there a bus or shuttle from the port to Taghazout?

Do not count on one. A grand taxi is the practical option: agree the price, the stops and the return time before you leave.

Can a complete beginner surf on a port day?

Yes. Our 2-hour surf lesson on Agadir's beach is suitable for beginners and includes the board, the wetsuit and a professional instructor.

Is Taghazout worth it on a short port call?

On a short call we usually suggest staying in Agadir: the Kasbah viewpoint, the marina and the beach promenade are much closer to the port.
